Re: Opinion thread '08 Games
Well, Christmas has passed (19th time for me
), and here's my list for the top 5 games of an amazing year.
5. Dead Space
A refreshing game for the horror genre and a worthy addition to my collection of games. It was not scary all the time mind you, but it spaced each jaw clenching, pants wetting moment to the point that it never gets old. The interface was amazing, and in my opinion, revolutionary and never took me out of the game.
4. Mirror's Edge
No, I do not own this game, but just from the demo I could tell this could be a great game. I do think this treasure was over shadowed by Gears, and Fallout, but it can't be missed. The adrenaline and heart stopping moments only the demo provided was enough for me to put Mirror's Edge at the 4 spot.
3. Left 4 Dead
This co-op essential pearl from Valve nearly won my top spot, but its single player mode held this one back. The single player was fun, but without your buddies to experience the chaos and utter excitement of hordes of zombies attacking, its just not that appealing. But any gamer needs to pick this one up. YAY VALVE!
2. Fable 2
Peter Moloneaux (Spell it right?) surprised many with his sequel to Fable, a great game in its own right. I've never played Fable until I got a hold of this one. At first the game seemed to start off slow, but once you've grown up and entered the world as a young man/woman, the pace picks up and the story unfolds in a strange way. At times you feel you know what's going to happen, and then something changes and it changes direction. The combat was fluid as well and the magic was a *blast* to use. (I just hate that I would accidently use it in a city and the citizens thus hated me.) The voice acting was amazing as well. I pitty the amount of voice overs the actors did, so much so that its mind boggling at how many sentences, expressions, etc. exist. Those who are even slightly attracted to the game should check it out!
1. FALLOUT 3
This was a tough choice as Fable 2 came close to taking this top spot. However, FALLOUT did one thing a little bit better than Fable 2: I became extremely attached to my original character. From beginning to end, I wondered what would happen to my character, to me. VATS only helped the game. After literally thousands of times I've used this targeting system of ultimate pwnage, I still enjoy popping a Ghoul in the head and watching his head explode into tiny bits and litter the ground. The game itself also held so much content that the amount of quests that you could do surpassed the length of the main quest by far. Oh, and each quest is unique and serves a purpose so you never feel like you're just running errands. The leveling system was well placed as well, to the point where everything felt balanced. From the skills you could choose, to the perks you could earn nothing ever felt too over powering, but always helped regardless. Overall, the game was exceptionally well done and well planned. Bethesda has definitely learned from their previous games and we reap the rewards. Fallout 3 is my GAME OF THE YEAR and lands at Number 1 on my list!
